"Characters are unique to the writers who translate them. One painter, One brush, One scene."

Wow. It's inspiring when a successful writer like Olympia makes the rest of us feel our own unique worth too.

Thanks, Lance, for this nice interview with Olympia - and now I have some new reading to add to my list!

What a beautifully insightful interview. I found Olympias advice invaluable and I love that you focused on Olympia as a creative person.

You are both wonderfully creative people with such unique talents, that very much came through.

Thank you both.

For me, the best part of this whole post was Lance Reynald's bio - one of those moments when you think, "Gee, I wish I'd written that!"

The Andy Warhol book sounds fascinating.

thanks to everyone for dropping by today.

Buckster- thanks for all the kind words. No one is below me.....I just haven't found the picture I like yet.
Sarah- always good to see you in the Park.
Juliet- Lanceographs?? See above. lol.
Joe- You should read them all, but "A Killing in this Town" is incredible.
Susan- beautifully put, though I will say Olympia treats the characters in her life with the same respect.
Frank- thanks for dropping by. Music is key to my writing too, I've found the deeper I get with it the more the characters start the choosing.
Pia-Thank you for dropping by the Park after NPR! I'd say start with the cover that draws you in, then read them all :) and, isn't Joni great?

Lance, I was just downstairs listening to Joni Mitchell on NPR, and then came up to poke around the internet, and here's this gift of an interview with Olympia Vernon. Which of her novels should I read first? The cover with the palm is one of the best covers I think I've ever seen.

Thank you both!

Great interview Lance. I can't wait to read some of Olympia's stuff. Also love LOVE how she talks about listening to the characters and not drowning them out with music you force on them. This is a great piece of advice, and one I only realized myself this past year or so. I used to write with music all the time (NEVER edited while listening to tunes though), and in some ways I think it helped the characters come to life in my book, but now I find it much more to their liking when I let them choose what to listen to. God, I feel cheesy saying that, but it is so true. Plus, Olympia said it first so I feel as though precedent has been set and all that. Thanks Olympia!
